No,
this has nothing in common with "Muskrat Love"
sung by the Captain and Tenile in the 1970s!! :) This is
a photographic look at the courtship and mating behavior
of the Black-necked Stilt.
The female Black-necked Stilt signals her readiness
to mate by assuming a head-down posture. |
|
|
After receiving the proper visual cue, the male
Black-necked Stilt mounts the female. |
|
| |
The actual act of copulation takes but just a
few brief seconds. |
|
|
Immediately after the male dismounts the female,
the Black-necked Stilt pair briefly cross bills
in an act of sublime tenderness.
|
|
Although
not pictured in this series (my compact flash card was full!),
the Black-necked Stilt pair perform a post-mating ceremonial
walk, side-by-side and in step with each other.
